Goodbye to Jason Molina

Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. passed away last weekend at 39 from alcohol-related problems. Very sad to hear this news.

I can’t claim to be a life-long fan but Magnolia Electric was one of those bands that Pandora kept putting in my rotation, and eventually I came to love their Crazy-Horse-inspired bombast. He was a unique, gifted songwriter and musician.

Alcoholism: cunning, baffling, powerful.

Update: Here is a touching and heartfelt obituary for Jason from Stephen Thompson at NPR.

what sad news. i dig the mec’s music and molina’s singing. one of my favorite songs to sing and play on the acoustic guitar is “whip-poor-will.”

now all you folks in heaven not too busy ringing the bell,
some of us down here ain’t doing very well.

    ring that bell, jason.
