Controversial American figure skater Johnny Weir has further outraged both anti-fur activists and dog lovers alike with his newest and most outrageous costume yet: a pink unitard festooned with patches of fur from Sadie, the Scottish terrier named Best in Show at the 134th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
“Sadie is — or rather was — a champion and I am a champion,” the flamboyant skater told reporters gathered at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver. “This new costume brings two champions together in a beautiful, elegant, organic, and daring way,” the skater said. Weir, who drew the ire of anti-fur activists at last month’s U.S. Nationals for wearing a costume that included fox fur, vowed that the spirit of Sadie incorporated into his costume would help him improve his current sixth place standing in men’s Olympic figure skating. “Sadie showed so much class in life when she won Best in Show, and now I’ve given her the opportunity to show even more class in death, as part of my costume.” Tearing up, Weir then added, “This adorable little Scottie did not die and undergo skinning in vain.”
